There remains an unmet need for HIV testing solutions: While progress has been made, barriers to HIV testing remain that impact achievement of the 95/95/95 targets. A crucial step to reaching the UNAIDS goals is to make sure people with HIV can be accurately identified. HIV Self-test can reduce barriers to testing by providing a convenient, confidential approach to HIV testing. Identifying HIV-positive patients by using fourth generation testing early on reduces the risk of onward transmission. Moving to Triple Elimination and Antenatal Care will also be essential. We all need to align and commit to reaching the 95-95-95 goal and ending the HIV epidemic by 2030.
Dedication is needed to stay ahead of the evolving public health demands and reach vulnerable populations. Addressing the HIV epidemic has been a shared global priority for decades and Abbott has woven these values into our 2030 sustainability plan and core business priorities. Everyday 600 PLHIV will die of TB: TB deaths among people living with HIV has increased for the first time in over a decade, with 215,000 deaths in 2020 due to COVID-19 disruption to TB services and lack of funding. Statistically, the chance that HIV positive patients will acquire TB is 60% in the first 2 years after HIV diagnosis in adults and 50% in children. Guidelines recommend CD4 cell counts at diagnosis as an essential diagnostic tool for identifying high-risk patients who need further diagnostic tests.
