Cardiovascular and renal complications are the main cause of death in people with diabetes. Despite this, the majority of people with diabetes are unaware of these health complications. The good news? Most complications can be detected in their early stages with the right screening practices.1
Learn more about the benefits of HbA1c POC testing, and the benefits of testing lipids and ACR on patient care in a primary care setting.
“Point-of-care HbA1c testing can deliver highly accurate results while the patient is still present in the practice. It provides a rapid, accurate and easy to access tool for healthcare professionals, with performance of some devices matching or even outperforming routine laboratory instruments”.

Kidney disease is one of the most serious complications of diabetes. Microalbuminuria is the first clinical sign of diabetic kidney disease and cardiovascular disease. Screening for albuminuria can be most easily performed by albumin, creatinine and albumin/creatinine ratio (ACR) in a random spot urine collection and should be done at least annually in people with type 2 diabetes.2
In all patients with diabetes, cardiovascular risk factors should be assessed at least annually.3 These risk factors include dyslipidemia, hypertension, smoking, a family history of premature coronary disease, and the presence of albuminuria.
A lipid profile should be obtained at diagnosis and every 5 years thereafter in patients under the age of 40. A lipid panel should be obtained before initiating lipid-lowering-therapy and annually thereafter.2
Diabetes is a complex disease that requires regular monitoring and care. Consultations with patients can be challenging and inefficient when you don’t have lab results available. Point-of-care testing provides the patient with immediate feedback and results and allows you to adjust their treatment based on the latest and most accurate information.
With its compact size and variety of tests, the AfinionTM 2 system is ideal for POC testing in a range of environments – from physician offices and clinics, to community health centers, retirement homes, emergency rooms and hospital out-patient clinics. In 3 easy steps, you can get highly accurate results for CRP, HbA1c, ACR and Lipid Panel during every consultation.
