Your Heart Health Matters

A quick cholesterol test can reveal important insights.

Having high cholesterol can lead to cardiovascular disease (CVD), but you have the power to manage your risk. The first step is getting tested to check your cholesterol levels. Once you know your numbers, understanding how to manage them is crucial.

By following established management and testing guidelines, as well as your healthcare provider’s instructions, you can take charge of your health and prevent CVD.

According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention:

Approximately 86 million U.S. adults aged 20 or older have high total cholesterol levels.*

HOW OFTEN SHOULD I HAVE MY CHOLESTEROL TESTED?

The American College of Cardiology/American Heart Association (AHA) Guidelines recommend:

Healthy adults over the age of 20 should get tested every 4 to 6 years. Individuals with existing health conditions should get tested annually.

Healthy children should be tested between ages 9 and 11 and adolescents between ages 17 and 21. Children and adolescents with obesity or diabetes should get tested more frequently.

TAKE CONTROL OF YOUR CHOLESTEROL

Point-of-care (POC) testing refers to medical diagnostic testing done at a location convenient for you, such as a nearby medical center, pharmacy, health fair, etc. With POC testing, the procedure, results, and one-on-one consultation with a healthcare provider are completed on-site immediately, in a matter of minutes. And studies have shown that POC analyzers provide results with accuracy equivalent to traditional labs.1

With traditional testing methods, patients usually must travel to a lab for a sample collection or have their sample sent to the lab. Either way, test results often take hours or days and follow-up appointments may be necessary.
