Syphilis wird durch den Organismus Treponema pallidum hervorgerufen und in der Regel durch Geschlechtskontakt übertragen. Eine Übertragung kann aber auch von der Mutter auf ihr Ungeborenes erfolgen (angeborene Syphilis). Sie ist heilbar; eine unbehandelte Syphilis kann jedoch irreversible neurologische Schäden und Herzschäden herbeiführen.
