Robert Gaynes, MD, FIDSA

Robert Gaynes, MD, is Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Emory University School of Medicine. He has worked as an Attending Infectious Disease Physician at the Atlanta VA Medical Center until his retirement in January 2022. He graduated from the University of Chicago Pritzker School of Medicine with honors. He did his residency and Infectious Disease Fellowship at the University of Chicago. He was also in the Epidemic Intelligence Service at the CDC. After completing his training, Dr. Gaynes worked as Hospital Epidemiologist and Infectious Disease Physician at the University of Michigan Medical Center before returning to the CDC where he worked for over 20 years.
Upon retiring from the CDC, he became Professor in Emory’s Department of Medicine/Division of Infectious Diseases. He has taught undergraduate and graduate courses on the History of Medicine, receiving numerous teaching awards including the Dean’s Teaching Award in 2018. He has written over 160 scientific articles and book chapters on infectious diseases and antimicrobial resistance. He is a Fellow in the Infectious Disease Society of America. As Professor Emeritus, he completed the second edition of his award-winning book, Germ Theory: Medical Pioneers in Infectious Diseases, (Washington DC: American Society of Microbiology Press, 2023) including new chapters on the discovery of HIV, the discovery of the role of H. pylori in peptic ulcer disease, and the COVID pandemic. He continues to teach the history of medicine seminars at Emory.
