Global Point of Care

OUT WITH THE NEW, IN WITH THE OLD

Atlanta's Piedmont Health System returns to i-STAT after an experience with a different POC testing provider didn't meet expectations.*

Switching to a new point-of-care analyzer can be a challenge for clinical end users. When Piedmont Health System changed vendors for its
point-of-care (POC) platform, they found the new provider did not perform as expected. Within months, they returned to Abbott’s
i-STAT System.

This large health system has 22 hospitals and 1,400 locations, including its flagship 622-bed Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. Its providers see 3.4 million patients annually, with a correspondingly high volume of patient testing.

In 2022, Abbott asked customers, including Piedmont, to transition to a new point-of-care (POC) testing system and discontinue use of the i-STAT CHEM8+ and CG4+ cartridges based on discussions with the FDA. Abbott was not sure it could supply Piedmont with enough alternate i-STAT cartridges to meet its high testing volume.

Abbott quickly resolved the issue and, in 2023, Piedmont’s dissatisfaction with its current POCT provider became untenable. Piedmont’s long history with Abbott and the clinical team’s confidence in the i-STAT System’s proven quality eventually convinced lab leadership to reintroduce i-STAT across several locations, including the Piedmont Atlanta Hospital. The go-live process went smoothly with i-STAT and Abbott’s in-person training, reaching over 400 users through more than 56 training sessions.

“As soon as I heard that the i-STAT cartridge issue was resolved, I went back to the lab directors and said, ‘we need to find a pathway back… At the end of the day, it’s clear to everyone who uses the device that i-STAT is superior to the alternative.”1

“Everyone is happy. It’s kind of back to normal for us… so much easier.”2

i-STAT Advantages

Although Piedmont's new POC system had similar specifications to the i-STAT System, the differences quickly became apparent for frontline users and in the lab.

According to Laurie Noltimier, Point of Care Coordinator at Piedmont Newnan Hospital, working with the new system during the COVID-19 pandemic was a disaster on top of disaster.2

SOME ADVANTAGES OF THE i-STAT System VS THE OTHER POCT SYSTEM INCLUDE:

LESS THAN 5% WASTED CARTRIDGE RATE WITH i-STAT

VS. >10% WITH OTHER SYSTEM

NO WARM-UP DELAY
WITH i-STAT

VS. 3-MINUTE DELAY
WITH OTHER SYSTEM

BATTERY BACK-UP DURING POWER OUTAGES WITH i-STAT

VS. NO BACK-UP
WITH OTHER SYSTEM
Other advantages of the i-STAT System:
  • Low cartridge failure rate
  • Easy software customization
  • Intuitive data management interface
  • Available comprehensive training & support

Conclusions

  • Eliminating a 3-minute warm-up delay was a game changer for Piedmont's critical care and emergency departments.
  • Use of a single testing platform streamlined training and system maintenance requirements and delivered consistent clinical results.
  • The availability of ACT testing with i-STAT further expanded their POCT capability.
  • Piedmont's POC teams benefited from the efficiency, simplicity, ease, and financial savings gained through use of the durable, accurate and consistent
    i-STAT System.

“It’s more than the device–it’s the people in the company. Abbott is a company that is listening to its customers and is making positive changes to its products over time. That’s part of the reason why, even after decades, i-STAT is still state of the art.”1
