On June 27 each year, the CDC promotes National HIV Testing Day. The theme of 2022 is “HIV Testing is Self-care”.

HIV testing is an act of self-care. Knowing one’s HIV status is the first step in getting care and treatment or engaging in prevention services, allowing individuals to live a long and healthy life.

the importance of early hiv diagnosis

The sooner the HIV virus can be detected, the faster the right treatment can be provided, improving an individual’s outcomes and quality of life.2

Early intervention also helps to prevent the transmission of the virus. Approximately 1 in 7 people do not know they have HIV3 and are responsible for 38% of new transmissions.4

The World Health Organization defines self-care as “the ability of individuals, families, and communities to promote health, prevent disease, maintain health, and to cope with illness and disability with or without the support of a healthcare provider”.1

There are approximately 1.2 million people living with HIV in the U.S., and 13% are unaware they are infected.5
In 2019, there were 36,801 new HIV diagnoses.6 Approximately 80% of new HIV transmissions are from individuals who do not know they have HIV infection and/or are not receiving regular care.2
